Copying Formulas

Often, the same formula is used many places in a workbook.

Excel formulas can be copied and pasted, using the copy/paste operations described previously in Moving and Copying.

Excel formulas can also be copied to adjacent cells using the fill handle.

To copy a formula using the fill handle:

  1. Select the cell containing the formula.

  2. Position the mouse pointer over the fill handle in the lower right corner of the active cell.

When the fat cross  turns to a thin cross,  click and drag the fill handle to adjacent cells.

  1. The fill handle will copy the formula to the adjacent cells.

  2. When an Excel formula is moved or copied to a new location, the cell references used in the formula are automatically adjusted relative to the new location.  Excel calls this using Relative Cell References.

Copy Worksheets with Formulas

Often a worksheet with formulas will need to be copied for multiple classrooms or organizations.  This way you can design a single master worksheet with all the correct heading and formulas, and create copies that can be used by different individuals.

To copy a worksheet:

  1. From the Edit menu, choose Move or Copy Sheet.

  2. From the dialog box, select the location for the copied sheet.

  3. Click the checkbox next to Create a Copy.  Click OK

  4. Change the name of the copied sheet by double clicking the sheet tab.  Change data on the copied sheet as necessary.
